学問の敷居を超えて、諸科学を統合する

一組の法則が全宇宙のあらゆる物体の運動を支配しているという、ニュートンの万有引力の法則が天界と地上の間の壁を破ったように、ダーウィンの進化論は自然淘汰という単一の枠組みで多くの学問分野を統合可能なことを示した。ダニエル・カーネマンらがノーベル経済学賞を受賞したとき、もはや経済学は人間の心理学的側面を無視できなくなり、行動経済学が息吹を挙げた。科学的知識の妥当性を議論するためには哲学の知識は必要だし（科学哲学）、現代の政治現象を理解するためには進化論的視点が不可欠である（進化政治学）。

こうして、知識の世界に立つ壁が現在次々と取り除かれており、物質と精神、生物学と社会、人文学と自然科学といった区分が崩壊しつつある。そこでコンシリエンス学会（The Consilience Society）では、スティーヴン・ピンカーを筆頭として欧米では進展している、科学と人文学の統合、すなわちコンシリエンス（consilience）を実現すべく、重要な学際的な創造的研究を高い学術的水準を備えた形で紹介していく。これにより、学問の領域横断的な発展を実現し、広く一般社会を科学と理性の力で啓蒙して、人類の幸福と繁栄を推進することを目指す。

Mission of The Consilience Society

Just as Newton’s gravitational law unified observed phenomena in the heavens and the earth, the concept of natural selection in Darwin’s theory of evolution has shown potential applications in multiple fields. When Daniel Kahneman and others won the Nobel Prize in economics, economics could no longer ignore the psychological aspects of human beings, and behavioral economics was born. Knowledge of philosophy is necessary to debate the validity of scientific knowledge (philosophy of science), and evolutionary perspectives are essential to understand contemporary psychological phenomena (evolutionary psychology).

Thus, the barriers standing in the world of knowledge are now being removed one by one, and the divisions between matter and spirit, biology and society, and the humanities and natural sciences are to break down. Considering this interdisciplinary trend, we introduce critical interdisciplinary research of a high scholarly standard, in order to realize “consilience”――the integration of science and humanities――, which is being developed around the world by scholars such as Steven Pinker. By doing so, we aim to achieve interdisciplinary development of the disciplines and enlighten the public at large with the power of scientific truth. Inspired by science, we would consider the reason to promote the happiness and prosperity of humanity.
